dc.contributor.advisor The article is concerned with the conception of education among contemporary Mayans in Guatemala with a focus on the changes that have occurred in the last fifty years. It looks at the Mayan conception of upbringing in the family, which is based on the personal example of parents and grandparents, and shared work with an orientation to the division of roles in the future lives of men and women. There is great emphasis on education in good manners, respect for older people, authorities and nature. The article also considers school education as conceived by Mayans in a system realised in some bilingual schools run by Ma- yan organisations. Here the major emphasis is on strengthening ethnic identity while encouraging respect for other cultures, and religious or ethnic differences, and on purity of language, knowledge of history and laws, a responsible atti- tude to nature, collective action, the cultivation of practical skills and artistic activities. Children and teenagers are encouraged to try to keep on educating and developing themselves, to take a responsible approach to spending leisure time, to honourable behaviour with an eye to social solidarity but never tolerance for violence (street crime and domestic violence are problems in Guatemala). Special care in the schools is devoted to talented individuals who will be able to take on future leadership roles in society. The article also looks at adult education, which according to the Mayan organisations is essential in view of the consequences of the armed conflict in the country (1960-1996), during which there was at- tempted genocide of Mayans by the military governments, the forced movement of millions of refugees into exile (in the towns of Guatemala, in the virgin for- ests and abroad); school education was in practice made impossible and so there was no transfer of knowledge – experience, from generation to generation. In the adult education courses a great deal of time is devoted to the spiritual aspect of life, knowledge of Guatemalan and international documents relating to human rights, and the formation of professionally well-trained and morally strong Ma- yan leaders.
