| dc.description.abstract | Although the theme of the battered, abused and neglected child (CAN – Child Abuse and Neglect syndrome) is publicly discussed, it is worth reminding ourselves of its seriousness and thinking about its possible causes. These may be stated in terms of what are known as risk factors, and in the text they are divided into risk factors relating to the relevant adult, the environment, and the child itself. The article seeks to open up discussion of the existence of what is known as the transgenerational transmission of CAN syndrome, which can affect several generations. The author mentions the theories of acknowledged experts on factors that might likewise be involved in the development of CAN syndrome or its transmission. Work on treatment of the childhood traumas caused by failures of parental care is very difficult but also beneficial both from the point of view of society and the perspective of the family in which abuse or neglect of a child occurs. At the end of the article the author reflects on the lack of systematic care that ought to be offered to risk families. The article contains the story of a mother who was placed in care after birth, and her daughter, who now lives in a foster family | en |
